Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
