McDonald's has taken down a Christmas advertisement made using Artificial Intelligence after receiving significant public disapproval.
The brief spot was developed with the help of AI video tools and was initially released publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Following its publication, commenters criticized the employment of AI in the film. Several labeled it "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".
"This moment is an key learning as we investigate the effective utilization of generative technology," stated a spokesperson from the company.
The commercial was produced for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various scenarios that often go badly during the festive season, using the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".
Campaigns that include generative AI have become a growing phenomenon among major brands, notably for the holiday campaign season.
After the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.
She stated, the development required "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any standard production".
"This wasn't just an AI trick," she commented. "We consider it a finished piece."
While the McDonald's commercial was mostly panned, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.
For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis received a 61% "positive feedback" from online commenters.
However, various brands have likewise faced backlash for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "cheap" and "disturbing".
The episode underscores the evolving debate within the marketing and production sectors about the balance between new tools and creative integrity.
